October Unemployment Rate 7.0 Percent

 Rate Down 0.2 Percentage Point from September

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Commissioner of Labor & Workforce Development James Neeley announced today Tennessee’s unemployment rate for October was 7.0 percent, down 0.2 percentage point from the September rate of 7.2. The October rate a year ago was 5.0 percent. The national unemployment rate for October 2008 was 6.5 percent, up from the September rate of 6.1.

Governor Bredesen Announces $1.7 Million in Safe Routes to School Funds to Local Communities

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen announced today that the state of Tennessee will provide $1.7 million in Safe Routes to School funds to ten Tennessee municipalities for projects aimed at increasing walking and biking to school among middle and elementary school children.  A complete list of communities receiving grants can be found at the bottom of this release.  The Safe Routes to School program is a statewide initiative designed to make bicycling and walking to school a safer, more appealing and healthier alternative for students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

NASHVILLE - Governor Phil Bredesen kicked off his seventh round of open state budget hearings Monday at the State Capitol, beginning with the Department of Education as is his tradition. Following the budget hearing, Bredesen and Education Commissioner Dr. Timothy Webb led an interactive civics lesson with high school students from four school systems. The students watched the budget hearing via streaming video, then submitted their questions about the education budget and state budget process to Bredesen and Webb for response.
