NASHVILLE-Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance Commissioner Leslie A. Newman has been elected Secretary-Treasurer of the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR), a nonprofit affiliate of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).
“I am thrilled to be able to serve NIPR in this capacity,” says Newman, who has served as a board member of the organization for one year. “The organization has demonstrated a consistent commitment to making state-based regulation of the insurance industry more efficient and effective. I hope to add to that record.”
As Secretary-Treasurer, one of her chief duties will be to serve as chairwoman of the NIPR audit committee. Newman, elected this week at the NAIC’s Winter National Meeting in Dallas, took office immediately following the election.
NIPR developed an electronic producer database (PDB) that manages data concerning insurance agents and brokers, which are also known as producers. The PDB serves as a repository of data that links the licensing systems of participating state regulators. The system works to manage information more efficiently by serving as a single source of multistate data while also reducing paperwork.
Newman was appointed Commissioner of the Department of Commerce and Insurance in January 2007 by Governor Phil Bredesen. A lawyer from Dallas, Newman has more than 28 years of experience as a regulatory attorney in both public and private practice.
The Department of Commerce and Insurance works to protect consumers while ensuring fair competition for industries and professionals who do business in Tennessee.
