NASHVILLE — Governor Phil Bredesen and Commissioner Matt Kisber, Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development today congratulated the leadership of the Whirlpool Corporation of Benton Harbor, Michigan on the company’s decision to invest $120 million in a new, approximately 1-million sq. foot manufacturing facility to produce premium built-in cooking products in Cleveland, Tennessee.

No Lane Closures on Tennessee Highways Labor Day Weekend

Construction Won’t Slow Holiday Travelers
 
NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Transportation is once again halting all lane closure activity on interstates and state highways for the busy Labor Day holiday travel period.  More than 600,000 Tennesseans are expected to travel by car this holiday.
 
Construction crews will stop all lane closure activity beginning at noon on Friday, September 3 through 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 7. This will provide maximum roadway capacity for motorists traveling during the busy Labor Day holiday.

THP Colonel Walker Announces Retirement

NASHVILLE--- After 30-plus years of distinguished service in law enforcement, Tennessee Highway Patrol Colonel Mike Walker today announced plans to retire as commander effective September 2, 2010. A career which spanned over three decades, Walker felt it was time to step down and spend more time with his family.
 
“Colonel Walker has done an extraordinary job restoring the integrity and credibility of the Tennessee Highway Patrol,” said Department of Safety Commissioner Dave Mitchell. “Under his leadership, the highest standards of professionalism were expected and transparency in dealing with disciplinary issues was ensured. The Colonel has gained the trust and admiration of the department and his legacy will be one of tremendous respect as a State Trooper and leader of the THP.”

Bredesen Requests SBA Assistance for Flood Recovery

Low-Interest Loans Could Aid Residents in Putnam and Surrounding Counties
 
NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen has requested assistance from the Small Business Administration to help speed recovery in Putnam County and the contiguous counties to help individuals and businesses as they recover from the flooding damages that occurred on August 16, 2010. The additional counties that would be eligible for SBA loans are Fentress, Overton, Jackson, Smith, DeKalb, White and Cumberland. Flood damage to homes and businesses occurred in multiple locations. 
 
A survey by the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency and the SBA indicates more than 25 homes and businesses in Putnam County sustained uninsured losses of 40 percent or more of their estimated pre-disaster fair market value.

Bredesen Signs Executive Order Establishing Council on Service Members, Veterans and Their Families

NASHVILLE - The Governor signed the Order today to coincide with Operation Immersion, a two-day military immersion training. This training was developed for behavioral health care providers by TDMHDD and the Tennessee National Guard. It focuses on military culture and issues unique to those who have served in combat and experienced one or multiple deployments. Mental health and substance use professionals from 19 states and five tribal nations are participating in the third Operation Immersion August 30 - September 1, 2010 at the Tennessee National Guard Training Center in Smyrna, Tenn.

Massive I-40 Project Recognized as One of Best in Nation for On Time Completion
 
NASHVILLE - The Tennessee Department of Transportation’s SmartFIX40 project is being recognized as one of the top transportation projects in the nation. The American Association of State and Highway Transportation Officials selected SmartFIX40 Contract 2 for an “America’s Transportation Award” for “On Time Completion, Medium Project” in the Southeast Region. The annual transportation awards identify achievement in the development and construction of transportation projects.

“Closing a major interstate is not an easy task and requires tremendous planning, commitment to quality and accountability, and effective management,” said Governor Phil Bredesen. “The on-time completion of this project was absolutely crucial and I’m pleased TDOT is being honored for this innovative work.”
 
“In May 2008, after extensive preparations we closed I-40 in Knoxville and reopened it 18 days ahead of schedule in June 2009 without a major incident during the closure,” said TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely. “I’m pleased AASHTO selected the SmartFIX40 project for this honor. It is a testament to the efforts and teamwork of TDOT employees, our contractors and local government partners that went into keeping this project on schedule.”

Bredesen Names Appointments to Boards and Commissions

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen has appointed 51 men and women to serve on 30 state boards and commissions. These Tennesseans represent areas from all across the state.
 
“The state of Tennessee is very fortunate to have citizens like these 51 men and women who are willing to serve the state through its boards and commissions,” Bredesen said. “They will be valuable additions to the respective boards they have been appointed to represent, and I appreciate their commitment and willingness to serve.”

Revenue Commissioner Farr to Leave Bredesen Administration

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen today announced that Tennessee Revenue Commissioner Reagan Farr will leave his administration effective September 1, 2010. Farr plans to return to the private sector following his tenure at the Department of Revenue, which began in 2003. Farr was named commissioner in 2007.
 
“Reagan Farr has played a key role in our efforts to create new jobs and attract capital investment during my time in office,” said Bredesen. “I appreciate his contributions to the success of my administration and thank him for his service to the people of Tennessee.”
 

Bredesen Continues Special Leave Policy for State Employees Called to Active Duty

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen today signed Executive Order No. 70, continuing a policy that ensures executive branch employees ordered to active military duty are not financially constrained by lower military pay while they are in service. Bredesen has signed this order each year since taking office.
 
“I have always been extremely proud of the service these men and women provide for our country,” said Bredesen. “They and their families make tremendous sacrifices for us every day, and we must do everything in our power to ease their burden. This is a policy I have felt strongly about since my first year in office, and I’m pleased to show our appreciation to our soldiers in this way.”
