Tennessee Highway Patrol Accepting Applications for Troopers

NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) announced today it is aggressively seeking men and women who are interested in careers in law enforcement for a new Trooper Cadet Class slated to begin in the spring of 2011, if funds become available. Applications will only be accepted from Thursday, August 26 through Friday, September 17, 2010. 
 

Agencies Partner to Host Operation Immersion Aug. 30 - Sept. 1

NASHVILLE Mental health professionals from 19 states and 5 tribal nations will participate in the third OPERATION IMMERSION August 30 - September 1, 2010, at the Tennessee National Guard Training Center in Smryna, Tenn. The unique military immersion training experience is hosted by the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Development Disabilities (TDMHDD) along with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the Tennessee National Guard and the Tennessee Veterans Task Force.

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Health honored nine Tennessee programs and organizations with the 2010 Shining Star Award. The award program is designed to recognize the contributions of an individual or group for efforts to promote healthy lifestyles. The areas of recognition are communities (Where We Live); employers (Where We Work); and educational settings (Where We Learn). The Shining Star Award recipients received their awards in Nashville, Tenn. on Monday, August 2, 2010.

July 2010 County Unemployment Rates

Rates Decrease in 87 Counties, Increase in 5, Remain the Same in 3
NASHVILLE – Tennessee’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for July was 9.8 percent, down two-tenths of a percentage point from the revised June rate of 10.0 percent. The national unemployment rate for July 2010 was 9.5 percent.

Automotive Supplier Announces $26 Million Investment in Shelbyville

Production Facility Will Create 170 Jobs in Bedford County

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen and Economic and Community Development Commissioner Matt Kisber announced today that SMW Automotive, a Tier 1 supplier of automotive chassis and suspension parts and subassemblies, will open a production facility in Shelbyville, Tenn. The 131,000 square foot Bedford County plant will represent a $26 million capital investment by the company and will create 170 jobs over five years.

Bredesen Holds Swearing-in Ceremony for Terry J. Oliver as Commissioner of Agriculture

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen today swore in Terry J. Oliver as Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Agriculture in a ceremony at the State Capitol. Oliver, who officially assumed his new duties on August 16, was previously deputy commissioner of the agency.
 
Oliver was joined by family, friends, department employees and others representing the agricultural community. Bredesen spoke of the experience and leadership Oliver brings to his new role and of the tremendous impact the Department of Agriculture has on the quality of life for all Tennesseans.

Grants to Fund Projects in 34 Tennessee Communities, 1 Statewide Project
 
NASHVILLE - Governor Phil Bredesen joined Tennessee Department of Transportation Commissioner Gerald Nicely today to announce the award of $18,536,915 in transportation enhancement grants to 34 communities and the Department of Tourist Development to fund projects across the state.

New $50 Million Energy Efficiency Loan Program Created to Help Tennessee Business Reduce Costs

State and Federal Governments to Work with Private Lenders, TVA to Help Companies Save Money, Increase Competitiveness
 
NASHVILLE — Governor Phil Bredesen and Commissioner Matt Kisber, Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development, announced today the launch of a new $50 million Energy Efficiency Loan Program to help Tennessee companies finance investments in energy efficient technology, energy retrofits and renewable energy systems. This innovative economic development program will be administered by Pathway Lending and will offer access to below-market rate loans, financing up to 100 percent of improvements aimed at reducing energy consumption, lowering overall costs and improving profitability.

Eight Tennessee Sites Added to the National Register of Historic Places

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Historical Commission has announced eight Tennessee sites have been added to the National Register of Historic Places. The National Register of Historic Places is the nation’s official list of cultural resources worthy of preservation. It is part of a nationwide program that coordinates and supports efforts to identify, evaluate and protect historic resources. The Tennessee Historical Commission administers the program in Tennessee.
