Sufficient Resources
As national, State and local leaders discuss possibly lengthening the school day, remember that the problem isn’t the amount of time, it’s the time itself. Learning needs to be separated from time. It may take one student two years to master Algebra, and it may take another only two months. Both should have the option of moving to the next level once they’ve mastered the subject. No sooner and no later. For more perspective on time and learning, see the national report on time and learning in education, Prisoners of Time, and my review of that report. Though the report was originally written in 1994, few of the recommendations have been adopted, and most of the practices the Commission decried are still in use.
