Bredesen Announces Letting of First Economic Recovery and Reinvestment Act Projects

Ten Local Bridges to be Replaced with Recovery and Reinvestment Funds
 
NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen announced today that 10 local bridges will be the first projects in Tennessee to be funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The 10 bridge replacement projects are scheduled for a construction letting on March 20, which means work could be underway on the projects by the end of March.
 
“These 10 bridge projects will bring much needed private industry jobs to areas of the state in need of economic investment and will create a safer, more efficient bridge system for all of us,” said Bredesen. “Selecting local bridge projects also allows us to ease the burden of local governments, because funds through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act do not require local matching funds.”
 
All 10 bridges are owned, maintained and operated by local governments. Normally, local governments are required to provide a 20 percent match in order to receive bridge funds; however, that match is waived under the ARRA.

German-based Polysilicon Manufacturer Becomes Tennessee’s Third  $1 Billion Project in Eight Months

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen today joined Economic and Community Development Commissioner Matt Kisber, Dr. Rudolph Staudigl, president and CEO of Wacker Chemie AG of Munich, Germany and Dr. Ingomar Kovar, president of Wacker Chemical Corporation, Adrian, Mich., in announcing the company’s plans to build a $1 billion facility for the manufacture of hyperpure polycrystalline silicon in Bradley County, Tenn. Polycrystalline silicon is a primary component used in the manufacture of solar panels and semiconductors and the project is expected to create more than 500 new jobs for the region.
 
“This announcement further enhances Tennessee’s growing reputation as an innovation center in the development and manufacture of clean energy technologies,” said Bredesen. “I appreciate Wacker Chemie’s investment in Tennessee and its recognition of the productivity of Tennessee workers, and I’m very pleased the company believes this is the best place to enhance its position in this growing economic sector.”

By most objective measurements, the state of Tennessee has had a strong year in the area of economic development and job creation. While national media focused on Volkswagen Group of America’s decision to locate a $1 billion, 2,000 job assembly plant in Chattanooga, our state has experienced other successes as well, perhaps not as high profile, but equally important. The people in Henderson, Tennessee are just as excited about automotive supplier Arvin Sango coming to town with a start up workforce of 40 employees as are the people in Gallatin about the arrival of Shoals Technologies, a maker of components for solar panels or folks in Newport about 100 new jobs at Lisega, the German pipeline supply maker. And while there’s an intense focus on new companies coming to our state, roughly two-thirds of the 25,000 new jobs our department helped create in FY07-08 came from companies already doing business in Tennessee.
