TDOS Participates in Operation Roadcheck 2009

THP Removes Unsafe Commercial Vehicles from Tennessee Roadways

NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee Department of Safety is participating in Operation Roadcheck 2009, a 72-hour commercial vehicle campaign in the U.S., Canada and Mexico sponsored by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (www.CVSA.org ). The goals of Operation Roadcheck 2009 are to increase commercial truck and bus safety and security and to reduce the number of crashes involving commercial trucks and motor vehicles. The event, which takes place simultaneously across North America, will begin at midnight, Tuesday, June 2, and continue through midnight, Thursday, June 4, 2009.

NASHVILLE – Millions of travelers will hit the highways this summer and the Tennessee Governor’s Highway Safety Office is reminding everyone to Click It or Ticket. During 2007, 927 passenger vehicle occupants lost their lives on Tennessee roadways and of those, 534 were not wearing seat belts. Today, the GHSO joined representatives from Georgia and Alabama to remind drivers of the dangers of traveling without a safety belt.

Nashville - Governor Phil Bredesen today vetoed House Bill 962, which would permit the possession of firearms in Tennessee restaurants and bars. Law enforcement officials and district attorneys from across the state flanked Bredesen as he spoke about his reasons for the veto.

 "Let me be very clear: I am a strong supporter of the right to keep and bear arms.  I am, and have always been, committed to preserving the rights of the Second Amendment: basic American rights. These rights are protected by the United States Constitution and the Tennessee Constitution as well," Bredesen said.

2009 Fall Protection Safety Stand Down

NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health Administration has partnered with several construction trade associations across the state to participate in the statewide Fall Protection Safety Stand Down. Participating employers will shut down their jobs on Monday morning, June 1, and train their employees on fall protection for approximately 45-60 minutes.

THP will be Looking for Unbuckled Drivers this Memorial Day Holiday and All Summer

NASHVILLE --- It only takes two seconds to buckle up. Two seconds that could literally save your life and also keep you from getting a ticket and a fine. The Tennessee Highway Patrol urges all drivers to buckle up every time, all the time, and State Troopers are joining forces with law enforcement officers across the state and country for the 2009 Click It or Ticket campaign. The initiative runs May 18, 2009, through May 31, 2009, and includes the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

FMCSA National Passenger Carrier Strike Force Enforcement

NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) will join forces with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to ensure passenger carriers such as school buses and motorcoaches are operating safely and in compliance with federal and state regulations on our state’s highways. Beginning May 8, 2009, and continuing through May 21, 2009, the THP Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division will participate in “Operation Safe Student”, which is part of the FMCSA’s National Passenger Carrier Strike Force aimed at strengthening motor carrier passenger safety.

Tennessee Is First State to Launch HunterExam.com's Interactive Hunter Education Course

NASHVILLE --- Tennessee is the first state to adopt the HunterExam.com ‘required study’ course. The new HunterExam online course allows students to complete coursework online before attending required hands-on classroom training to obtain their Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) hunter education certificate.

Since all persons born on or after Jan. 1, 1969 must satisfactorily complete a hunter education course before obtaining a Tennessee hunting license, HunterExam.com projects an engaging and effective way of preparing future hunters.

Governor Bredesen Declares April 6-10 Work Zone Awareness Week

 

TDOT Reminds Motorists to Stay Safe When Driving in Work Zones
 
Nashville, TN — Governor Phil Bredesen today proclaimed the week of April 6 – 10, 2009 as Work Zone Awareness Week, joining states across the nation to remind motorists to be safe in work zones. TDOT will hold events across the state this week in an effort to improve safety in Tennessee’s interstate and highway construction and maintenance work zones.
 
“The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 will bring hundreds of new transportation projects to counties across the state,” said Governor Bredesen. “This will mean an increase in highway work zones and increased dangers for motorists and for workers. I hope by proclaiming this week Work Zone Awareness Week in Tennessee we can bring greater attention to the importance of work zone safety.”
