PETROS - The end of an era has come for the Tennessee Department of Correction.  The Brushy Mountain Correctional Complex, the state's oldest operating prison, will officially close on Thursday, June 11, 2009.   Brushy Mountain first opened in 1896.  It has served as a reception center for East Tennessee and as a maximum-security prison.

WARTBURG - An inmate who escaped TDOC custody is now back behind bars.  Josey Tee Jenkins, 29, walked away from a prison work crew in the Lancing community of Morgan County just before noon Monday. 

MEMPHIS - Tennessee Department of Correction Internal Affairs agents have charged a Germantown, Tennessee woman with introducing contraband into a penal facility.  Kimberly Underwood, 50, is accused of mailing drugs and cash into at least two state prisons.

TIPTONVILLE - The Department of Correction is investigating the homicide of an inmate at the Northwest Correctional Complex in Tiptonville.  The preliminary investigation shows that inmate Maurice Teague, 27, was stabbed Friday, May 15 at approximately 7:40 p.m. inside his cell.  He was pronounced dead at Baptist Hospital in Union City.

MOUNTAIN CITY - The Department of Correction is investigating the apparent homicide of an inmate at the Northeast Correctional Complex in Mountain City.  The preliminary investigation shows that inmate Allen Gibson, 57, had been involved in a physical altercation with inmate Charles Godsby, 37, on April 2.

NASHVILLE - An inmate who escaped from the Charles Bass Correctional Complex/Annex is back in TDOC custody.  Internal Affairs agents captured Troy Dean Pomeroy at 12:30 this morning at a hotel in South Nashville. Pomeroy was taken into custody without incident.

WARTBURG, TN - Tennessee's new state-of-the-art prison will officially open next week in Wartburg, Tennessee.  The Morgan County Correctional Complex will house more than 2,400 inmates and will lead to the decommissioning of the historic Brushy Mountain Correctional Complex.

Only, TN - TDOC Internal Affairs agents have identified the person believed to be responsible for the homicide of an inmate at the Turney Center Industrial Prison in Hickman County.  Daniel Whalen, 32, was found stabbed to death outside a prison cell around 7:30 a.m. Thursday.

Nashville, TN - A special Easter party for children of incarcerated parents will be held this Saturday at the Tennessee Prison for Women.  Volunteers from Wings Ministry will host the party to give children a chance to make Easter cards and crafts and enjoy lunch with their parents.
