Statewide Library Initiative to Strengthen Rural Communities, Help Unemployed

Rural Libraries Eligible for Computer Labs and Training Grants
 
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. — Thanks to a joint effort between the Office of the Secretary of State, the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development (ECD) and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development, computer technology resources and training will soon be coming to as many as 76 libraries in 61 rural Tennessee counties. The initiative is the culmination of more than a year’s effort by ECD and the Tennessee State Library and Archives (TSLA) division of the Office of the Secretary of State. ECD and TSLA recently attracted the attention and support of USDA Rural Development, resulting in the formation of a critical state-federal initiative that will have a significant impact on citizens in rural Tennessee.

ECD, TVA Announce Energy Management Workshops for K-12 Schools

Statewide Seminars Help Schools and School Systems Ease the Grip of High Energy Costs

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development announced today it will partner with the Tennessee Valley Authority to host statewide Energy Management Workshops to help K-12 schools lessen the impact of energy costs on school budgets. The free, one-day workshops will help schools and school districts develop multi-disciplinary energy management plans to provide real solutions and savings on energy expenses.

Bredesen Recommends ARC Grants

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen today announced the recommendation of 17 Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) grants to assist state and local agencies, governmental entities, local governing boards or nonprofit organizations with infrastructure improvements.

NASHVILLE – Economic and Community Development Commissioner Matt Kisber and ECD’s Energy Policy Office announced today that applications are available for the 2010 Energy Camps. The camps will provide K-12 teachers with the information and resources needed to teach the science of energy and energy conservation in the classroom and to guide students in becoming leaders in their school and community.

Bongards' Creameries Purchases Production Facility in Humboldt

New Cheese Processing Facility Will Create 89 Jobs
 
NASHVILLE – Economic and Community Development Commissioner Matt Kisber today congratulated company officials from Bongards’ Creameries, a manufacturer of natural and process cheeses and whey proteins, on the purchase of a 114,000 square-foot production facility in Humboldt. The investment will create 89 new jobs over the next three years.

Wacker Chemie Among Winners of 2010 Investment Awards

Company and ECD Honored for Efforts in Corporate Investment and Economic Development
 
NASHVILLE – The publishers of Trade & Industry Development magazine, a national economic development publication, have named Wacker Chemie and the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development among the winners of its 2010 Corporate Investment & Community Impact (CiCi) Awards. The project was chosen as one of 15 in the Corporate Investment category for the Munich-based company’s $1 billion investment and forecasted creation of 500 jobs in Bradley County.

Tennessee Ranked among Top Five in U.S. For Economic Development by Site Selection

NASHVILLE – Tennessee has again been ranked among the top states in the nation in Site Selection magazine’s annual Governor’s Cup rankings for its economic development performance in 2009. The economic development publication put the Volunteer State at No. 5, the highest ranking of any Southeastern state. The Governor’s Cup award recognizes states with the most new or expanded private-sector capital projects as tracked by publisher Conway Data Inc.’s New Plant Database. The magazine gave its top ranking to the state of Ohio, followed by Texas, Michigan and Pennsylvania.
 
“I’m pleased the editors of Site Selection have included Tennessee among the top performing states in the nation for job creation,” said Governor Phil Bredesen. “We’ve worked hard to develop and enhance a strong business climate and to create strategies aimed at placing Tennessee at the forefront of emerging industries. 10 Communities Chosen for New Downtown Revitalization Program

Tennessee Downtowns to Offer Selected Communities Technical Assistance, Workshop, Grant Funds
 
NASHVILLE – Commissioner Matt Kisber of the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development today announced that 10 communities have been selected to participate in Tennessee Downtowns, a community improvement program for cities and counties seeking to revitalize traditional commercial districts.
 
The selected communities are: Celina, Erwin, Jefferson City, Martin, Milan, Mt. Pleasant, Monterey, Paris, Selmer and Sweetwater.
