Tennessee Expands Service of Free Fruits and Vegetables in Schools

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen and Education Commissioner Timothy Webb announced today that nine additional Tennessee elementary schools will participate in the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable program this school year due to a federal grant. Participating schools receive funding to offer free fruits and vegetables to students during the school day. The program aims to increase student consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables.

The USDA School Lunch program provides more than 600,000 meals to Tennessee students each day.

NASHVILLE – Warner Ross, currently principal of Bolivar Middle School in Hardeman County, has been named Tennessee’s 2008-09 Principal of the Year. Dr. David Timbs, Supervisor of Instruction for Johnson County Schools, was award the honor of 2008-09 Tennessee Supervisor of the Year.

Tennessee Names 2009 Teacher of the Year

NASHVILLE – Bradley County high school mathematics teacher Luajean Bryan was named Tennessee Teacher of the Year Monday night during the annual Teacher of the Year banquet. Meera Krishnan, of Shelby County, and Micahel Brown, of Montgomery County, are the grand division winners from West and Middle Tennessee respectively.
