NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen and Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation Commissioner Jim Fyke announced today the results of a University of Tennessee study that quantifies the significant positive impact Tennessee State Parks have on the state’s economy. The study indicates Tennessee State Parks pump millions of dollars into local economies and create thousands of jobs.

NASHVILLE - The 6th Annual Reelfoot Lake Eagle Festival is set for Friday through Sunday, Feb. 5-7.  This annual winter pilgrimage of the majestic American Bald Eagle will bring these winged creatures back to northwest Tennessee from their summer homes in the upper Great Lakes and Canada. With wingspans of six to eight feet and weights up to 16 pounds, the American Bald Eagle has been returning to the open water, marshes and cypress-laden sloughs of Reelfoot Lake for generations.

Recreation Initiative Program Grant Cycle Announced; Workshop Slated for March 3

NASHVILLEThe Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation is soliciting Tennessee Recreation Initiative Program grant applications from local governments that do not currently have parks or recreation departments.   TRIP grants help communities create recreation opportunities for citizens by assisting with the establishment of a parks department. Applications are due April 15, 2010, and award recipients will be announced in May.

NC Environmental Officials to Take Tennesseans' Comments on Draft Discharge Permit Affecting Pigeon River

NEWPORT, Tenn. – The North Carolina Environmental Management Commission will visit Newport, Tennessee on January 25, 2010 to take Tennesseans’ public comments on the draft permit North Carolina is proposing to issue to Blue Ridge Paper Products, Inc., doing business as Evergreen Packaging. The proposed permit regulates the discharge of wastewater to the Pigeon River at Canton, North Carolina upstream of the Tennessee state line.

NASHVILLE A consortium of state and federal agencies, along with several private organizations in Tennessee, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding as part of an ongoing effort to safeguard the state’s resources from the potential impact of the most threatening non-native invasive plants. 
 
The MOU establishes a clear path for a strategic plan to be developed, pooling resources to prevent these species from getting a foothold in Tennessee. In addition, the MOU outlines the provision for a public information point source and a citizen reporting system if these species are detected.
