NASHVILLE – Frozen Head State Park near Wartburg will host a Civilian Conservation Corps reunion from 12:30 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 31. The event will honor the CCC’s contributions to the state of Tennessee’s parks and natural areas.

ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. Tennessee’s longest running outdoor drama, Liberty:  The Saga of Sycamore Shoals, will kick off its 32nd season on July 15 at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park.  

Depicting the 18th-century settlement of Northeast Tennessee, Liberty! is presented each year by local performers and volunteers against the backdrop of Sycamore Shoal’s Fort Watauga.  Visitors will have an opportunity to see the Revolution as told by the Overmountain Men – colonists who defied British law and settled on Cherokee lands. These settlers formed an independent government, made treaties with the Cherokee, defended their homes and fought a British army at the epic battle of King’s Mountain. 

 

Fall Creek Falls State Park Golf Course Recognized for Environmental Excellence

PIKEVILLE, Tenn. – Environment and Conservation Commissioner Jim Fyke announced today that Fall Creek Falls Golf Course has been designated as a “Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary” by Audubon International. The course is the 10th in Tennessee and the third within the Tennessee State Parks system to receive this honor. Only 761 golf courses worldwide have been designated as Audubon Cooperative Sanctuaries.

Federal Preservation Grant Applications Now Available from Tennessee Historical Commission

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Historical Commission is accepting grant applications for historic preservation projects for the 2010-2011 fiscal year. These grants, which are federally funded, will be available after October 1, 2010.
 
The precise amount of funds available in Tennessee will not be known until Congress has passed the FY 2010-2011 budget. However, it is expected to be approximately $400,000. After review, applications will be rated and ranked. Funding decisions will be made when the exact amount of the federal allocation is known. This normally occurs by December but could be as late as spring 2011.

NASHVILLE – Department of Environment and Conservation Commissioner Jim Fyke and Deputy Commissioner Paul Sloan presented the 2010 Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Awards at the Ellington Agriculture Center campus in Nashville today, recognizing 16 honorees whose efforts have made a positive impact on the state’s natural resources. 

 

Environment and Conservation Increasing Patrols and Surveillance at Piney Falls State Natural Area

GRANDVIEW, Tenn. – The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation is increasing patrols and surveillance at Piney Falls State Natural Area in Rhea County in an effort to protect the site from ongoing trespassing and vandalism.  A new gate has also been installed and illegal access points blocked.

Penalty Addresses Noncompliance with Tennessee's Water and Solid Waste Laws

NASHVILLE –Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation Commissioner Jim Fyke and Deputy Commissioner Paul Sloan today announced the issuance of a Commissioner’s Order against the Tennessee Valley Authority assessing $11.5 million in penalties in response to the catastrophic coal ash release on December 22, 2008.  The penalties address violations of the Tennessee Water Quality Control Act and the Tennessee Solid Waste Disposal Act.

PIKEVILLE, Tenn. – Fall Creek Falls State Park’s Summer Concert Series is in full swing, offering live music every weekend through September 5. Featuring an array of artists, including country, bluegrass and folk, all concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. (CDT) and will run approximately two hours. Admission is $3 and children six and under are admitted free. 
 
“We look forward to this time of year as the Fall Creek Falls Summer Concert series kicks off, giving us an opportunity to celebrate the season with our many park patrons and visitors,” said Park Manager Jim Hall. “This year’s roster includes some very talented musicians and we are pleased to offer something unique and fun for the whole family – all at a great value.”
