TDOT Hires 24 Additional People through Recovery Act Funded Initiative to Reduce Unemployment
 
NASHVILLE – Twenty-four Lauderdale County citizens put on their hard hats and safety vests and hit the roads today as new employees of the Tennessee Department of Transportation. The new TDOT hires are part of Governor Phil Bredesen’s initiative to reduce unemployment in Lauderdale County by using Recovery Act funds to create job opportunities. The plan calls for the creation of 175 jobs, including 50 new Highway Maintenance workers at TDOT.

TDOT’s New Employees Eager to Start New Jobs
 
Knoxville, Tenn. – Fifty Hancock County residents have their hard hats and safety vests in hand and are ready to start their new jobs with the Tennessee Department of Transportation.  The employees are part of a plan outlined by Governor Phil Bredesen on December 16, 2009 to use federal Recovery Act funds to reduce unemployment in Hancock County. On Monday, February 1, 45 new hires began their employee and safety training with TDOT and on Tuesday the department hired five more Hancock County residents. 
 
“TDOT has worked quickly to hire, train and place these Hancock County citizens on the job as highway maintenance workers,” said Bredesen. “These new jobs, along with others outlined in the plan to reduce unemployment in Hancock County, should help ease some of the strain caused by the economic downturn.”

NASHVILLE ‑ The Tennessee Department of Human Services is looking for non-profit and local government agencies to help feed low-income children this summer. The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is designed to provide healthy, nutritious meals to needy children during summer vacation. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) provides funding for the program, which is specifically designed for children who depend upon school lunch and breakfast programs and whose nutritional needs may be greater when schools are closed.

NASHVILLE – Twenty-nine Lauderdale County citizens hit the roads today as new employees of the Tennessee Department of Transportation. On December 16, 2009, Governor Phil Bredesen outlined a plan to use federal Recovery Act funds to reduce unemployment and put 175 people back to work in Lauderdale County. The 29 newly-hired TDOT workers are among the first to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the Governor’s plan.

Effort to Combat Unemployment Targets County with High Unemployment Rate

NASHVILLE - Governor Phil Bredesen today announced a plan to reduce unemployment in Hancock County by putting up to 100 people back to work using federal dollars available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Hancock County has had one of the state’s highest unemployment rates – 17.8 percent in November – for the past three months and includes 430 currently unemployed residents.

SMYRNA , Tenn. – One of the largest groups of young men and women graduated today from the Tennessee Rehabilitation Center in Smyrna today.   Eighty-nine young men and women with significant disabilities walked or rolled their wheelchairs across the stage this morning during a graduation ceremony at the Tennessee Rehabilitation Center. The students, whose disabilities include quadriplegia, mental retardation, and traumatic brain injury, overcame tremendous barriers to get here today.

NASHVILLE— Governor Phil Bredesen has proclaimed October 30th Weatherization Day in Tennessee to promote the economic and environmental benefits of this home energy efficiency program.

 

“The Recovery Act has increased funding and expanded eligibility for this program that previously benefited only a few thousand Tennesseans each year,” said Governor Bredesen. "I'm extremely pleased more families now qualify and encourage all those that do to take advantage of this opportunity to reduce their energy consumption and utility costs.”

NASHVILLE – More than 4,000 children are now enrolled in the Child Care Recovery Scholarship program. This time-limited, American Recovery and Reinvestment Act program is helping thousands of families across the state make ends meet by reducing their weekly child care bills.
 
“This Recovery Act program is already helping provide safe, quality child care to thousands of Tennessee children,” said Governor Phil Bredesen. “Our goal has been to reach as many children as possible and encourage families to utilize all the benefits available to them under this program. State Earns Performance Bonus for Getting Benefits to Needy Citizens

NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Department of Human Services this week was recognized by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for having one of the nation’s top Food Stamp programs. Food Stamps, now called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (or SNAP), help low-income families put food on the table each month. Tennessee was cited as giving its eligible citizens the best access to the program and earned the top performance award of $3.3 million.
