June Unemployment Rate 10.8 Percent

Rate Up 0.1 Percentage Point from May

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Commissioner of Labor & Workforce Development James Neeley announced today Tennessee’s unemployment rate for June was 10.8 percent, up 0.1 percentage point from the May rate of 10.7 percent. The June rate a year ago was 6.4 percent. The national unemployment rate for June 2009 was 9.5 percent, up from the May rate of 9.4 percent.

State Initiative Helps Perry County Achieve Job Recovery

Recovery Act Creates 460 New Jobs, Resources Allocated for 50 More

NASHVILLE - Governor Phil Bredesen announced state and local governments have reached the initial goal to employ 300 residents of Perry County using federal dollars provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).
 
Currently, 304 positions have been filled that include government and private sector employment. In addition, 156 Perry County residents between the ages of 14 and 24 are participating in the Summer Youth Employment Program. The statewide program, also funded by Recovery Act dollars, provides summer employment and job training opportunities to low-income residents. This program continues through August 7th.
 
"The effect of this effort is significant, and I appreciate the coordination of state and local governments with private employers in Perry County," Bredesen said. "I’m also extremely pleased this work will continue with the allocation of additional resources to create 50 more jobs in Perry County."

Governor Awards $926,508 in Recovery Training Grants Across State

10 Companies Awarded Grants, Training 1,365 Employees

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen and Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development Commissioner James Neeley have recently awarded $926,508 in recovery training grants to 10 companies across the state. These grants, which are funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, will provide training to 1365 employees.

Extended Unemployment Benefits Available for Eligible Tennesseans

Recovery Act Provides Funding for the Tennessee Extended Benefits Program 

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen recently signed into law legislation extending unemployment benefits with federal funding provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The Tennessee Extended Benefits Program adds a maximum of 20 weeks of benefits for claimants who exhausted their emergency unemployment compensation benefits on or after February 28, 2009.

May 2009 County Unemployment Rates

Rates Increase in 88 Counties, Decrease in Six

NASHVILLE – Tennessee's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for May 2009 was released last week at 10.7 percent, 0.8 percentage point higher than the April rate of 9.9 percent. The United States’ unemployment rate for the month of May was 9.4 percent.
