Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health Aid in Relief Efforts

NASHVILLE — Representatives of the Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health Administration (TOSHA) worked with clean-up crews, contractors and homeowners in Murfreesboro this week to urge job safety during the recovery process from tornadoes that struck on April 10. TOSHA staff traveled to Rutherford County to provide assistance and distribute safety and health guidelines covering such topics as chain saw safety, proper use of portable generators, fall protection, work zone safety, electrical hazards and carbon monoxide poisoning.

ARRA Helps Disadvantaged Youth Obtain Summer Jobs

Recovery Act Provides $25 Million to Create Thousands of Jobs

NASHVILLE– Eligible youth are already signing up for the Summer Youth Jobs Program in Tennessee. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) is providing $25 million to help provide 12,000 jobs for disadvantaged youth. Summer work will begin in June and end in September for most participants.
 
“The money provided by the ARRA is helping re-instate a valuable program that will help train, educate and enrich our youth,” said Governor Phil Bredesen. “We want the participants in this program to walk away with actual workplace experience that will help to better their future.”

March Unemployment Rate 9.6 Percent

Rate Up 0.6 Percentage Point from February

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Commissioner of Labor & Workforce Development James Neeley announced today Tennessee’s unemployment rate for March was 9.6 percent, up 0.6 percentage point from the revised February rate of 9.0 percent. The March rate a year ago was 5.7 percent. The national unemployment rate for March 2009 was 8.5 percent, up from the February rate of 8.1 percent.
 
“The unemployment rate continues on an upward trend and economists predict Tennessee will face difficult months ahead,” said Labor Commissioner James Neeley. “For the first time in several months, however, we are seeing increases in retail trade and leisure and hospitality employment, which are encouraging signs.”

Recovery Act Assists Workers 55 and Older

Senior Workers Program Receives $484,100 

NASHVILLE – Unemployed low-income Tennesseans age 55 and older will soon see additional training and employment opportunities as a result of a $484,100 grant funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The money will be used to expand the existing Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP), aimed at helping older workers with poor employment prospects.

February 2009 County Unemployment Rates

Rates Increase in 63 Counties, Decrease in 29

 NASHVILLE – Tennessee's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for February 2009 was released last week at 9.1 percent, 0.5 percentage point higher than the January rate of 8.6 percent. The United States unemployment rate for the month of February was 8.1 percent.
 
County non-seasonally adjusted unemployment rates for February 2009, released today, show that the rate increased in 63 counties, decreased in 29 counties and remained the same in three counties.

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen and Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development Commissioner James Neeley have awarded $50,000 to Heat & Frost Insulators Local #86 J.A.T.C. in Madison. The grant will provide training to 20 apprentices in commercial and industrial insulation.

Memphis Electrical Joint Apprenticeship & Training Committee Awarded $50,000

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen and Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development Commissioner James Neeley have awarded $50,000to Memphis Electrical Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (MEJATC). The grant will provide training to 110 apprentices in commercial, industrial and electrical technology.
