Tennessee Department of Labor Announces Release of Online Application for Extension of Unemployment Benefits

 Approximately 25,000 Tennesseans Eligible for Additional Benefits
 
NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development is on schedule to complete the online applications for the latest federal extension of unemployment benefits. The application will be available on the Tennessee Department of Labor’s Internet site on December 11, and the first benefit payments are expected to be mailed December 18, 2009.
 

Governor Awards Sequatchie Co. Company Job Training Grant

C & D Technologies, Inc. Awarded $25,854
 
NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen and Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development Commissioner James Neeley have awarded $25,854 to C&D Technologies, Inc. in Dunlap. This grant will provide training to 59 employees in Shop Math & Reading Electrical Blueprints, Leadership & Management Skills and Lean Manufacturing.
 

Governor Awards Lauderdale Co. Company Job Training Grant

 
Marvin Windows and Doors of Tennessee Awarded $6,400
 
NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen and Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development Commissioner James Neeley have awarded $6,400 to Marvin Windows and Doors of Tennessee in Ripley. This grant will provide training to 80 employees in Microsoft Office, Problem Solving, planning and Tactical Management.
 

Governor Awards Lawrence Co. Company Job Training Grant

Dyna-Pak Corporation Awarded $800
 
NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen and Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development Commissioner James Neeley have awarded $800 to Dyna-Pak Corporation in Lawrenceburg. This grant will provide training to 25 employees in New Blender Systems and Extrusion Production.
 

Philips Professional Luminaires Wins State Award for Worker Training

NASHVILLE –Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development Commissioner James Neeley presented the third annual Jim Alford Memorial Award for Outstanding Incumbent Worker Training to Philips Professional Luminaires North America, Sparta, Tennessee.  The award publicly acknowledges the exceptional efforts of a Tennessee business that has provided incumbent worker training through the Incumbent Worker Training program. Philips Professional Luminaires North America received a $24,925 to train more than 165 workers in Lean Manufacturing, Basic Switch & Router Configuration, Total Production Maintenance and Hydraulics and Pneumatics Trouble Shooting.  They are projected to create 20 new jobs and save 264 jobs by providing this training.
 

October 2009 County Unemployment Rates

Rates Increase in 39 Counties, Decrease in 42, Remain the Same in 15
NASHVILLE – Tennessee’s unemployment rate for October was 10.5 percent, unchanged from the September rate of 10.5 percent. The United States’ unemployment rate for the month of October was 10.2 percent.

Recovery Act Grant Enhances Green Job Employment Search

Automotive Workers Will More Easily Connect with Green Industries
 
NASHVILLEWorkers in the automotive industry will find it easier to direct their job search activities to occupations in green industries as a result of a research grant awarded the Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development.
 
The U.S. Department of Labor announced the $765,000 Recovery Act grant to the Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development to create labor market data to assess economic activity in the energy efficiency and renewable energy industries and identify occupations and skill requirements within those industries. The focus of the research is to assist workers affected by significant automotive-related restructurings to connect to career pathways in green industries.

NASHVILLE– Governor Phil Bredesen and Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development Commissioner James Neeley have awarded $1,666,868 in job training grants to 64 companies across the state. Incumbent Worker Training grants assist employers with upgrading skills and avoiding layoffs for their employees.
