NASHVILLE – Tennessee Commissioner of Labor & Workforce Development James Neeley announced today Tennessee’s unemployment rate for December was 7.9 percent, up 0.9 percentage point from the November rate of 7.0 percent. The December rate a year ago was 5.0. The national unemployment rate for December 2008 was 7.2 percent, up from the November rate of 6.8.

NASHVILLE – Tennessee's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for November 2008 was released last week at 6.9 percent, 0.1 percentage point lower than the October rate of 7.0 percent. The United States unemployment rate for the month of November was 6.7 percent.

Chattanooga Career Center Gets New Home

Career Center Moves to 5600 Brainerd Road

NASHVILLE – Employers and Jobseekers who use the services of the Tennessee Career Center in Chattanooga at 1105 East 10th Street, will soon be going to a new location. Beginning on Monday, December 22, the new location will be 5600 Brainerd Road, Suite A-5, in the Eastgate Town Center mall. The location is between the J. A. Henry Family YMCA and the Electric Cowboy.

NASHVILLE –Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development Commissioner James Neeley presented the second annual Jim Alford Memorial Award for Outstanding Incumbent Worker Training to ThyssenKrupp Elevator in Middleton, Tenn. The award publicly acknowledges the exceptional efforts of a Tennessee business that has provided incumbent worker training through the Incumbent Worker Training program. ThyssenKrupp Elevator spent $99,214 to train more than 800 workers in three components of lean manufacturing. They are projected to create 20 new jobs and save 350 jobs by providing this training.

Governor Awards $381,562 in Job Training Grants across State

13 Companies Awarded Grants, Training More Than 500 Employees
 
NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen and Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development Commissioner James Neeley have recently awarded $381,562 in job training grants to 13 companies across the state. Incumbent Worker Training grants assist existing employers with training needs associated with skills upgrades for their employees. Over the past three years, Incumbent Worker Training grants have totaled more than $5.7 million to assist more than 22,000 employees.
