Bredesen Announces $15 Million in Grants to Sixteen Airports & the Civil Air Patrol

Grants awarded through TDOT’s Aeronautics Division

NASHVILLE—Governor Phil Bredesen announced today that $15,300,320 in Aeronautics Grants have been approved for 16 Tennessee Airports and the Civil Air Patrol.

“Our local airports are vital to the economy and travel system of Tennessee,” said Bredesen.  “Investing in our airports helps keep them competitive and efficient at meeting the needs of businesses and travelers.  I’m pleased to support their continued improvement.”

The Eighth Annual Festival is Expected to Draw over 80,000 to Manchester Area
 
NASHVILLE – For the eighth year in a row, the city of Manchester is gearing up to receive nearly 80,000 visitors from across the country as music lovers flock to one of the premier summer music festivals, Bonnaroo. The Tennessee Department of Transportation and Tennessee Highway Patrol are partnering again this year to ensure smooth traffic flow during the event.  The 2009 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival kicks off Thursday night, June 11, and winds down Sunday night, June 14.  Thursday, June 11, is expected to be the heaviest traffic day.

TDOT Invites Public to Participate in Reopening of I-40 in Knoxville

Drivers Can Line Up to be Among the First to Drive the New I-40
  
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Department of Transportation is inviting Knoxville citizens to be among the first to drive the new I-40 on June 12. TDOT will hold a “rolling road opening” as part of the grand reopening of I-40 on Friday, June 12 and is inviting the motoring public to join in on the event.
 
“Knoxville citizens have rerouted their lives for the last fourteen months and deserve much of the credit for the success of the SmartFIX40 project,” said TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely. “It’s only fitting that they be among the first to travel the new and improved I-40 through downtown Knoxville.”

NASHVILLE – Millions of travelers will hit the highways this summer and the Tennessee Governor’s Highway Safety Office is reminding everyone to Click It or Ticket. During 2007, 927 passenger vehicle occupants lost their lives on Tennessee roadways and of those, 534 were not wearing seat belts. Today, the GHSO joined representatives from Georgia and Alabama to remind drivers of the dangers of traveling without a safety belt.

New Hires are on the Job after Two Days of Safety and New Employee Training
 
NASHVILLE – Forty-six Perry County citizens hit the roads today as new employees of the Tennessee Department of Transportation.  On May 15, Governor Phil Bredesen outlined a plan to use federal Recovery Act funds to reduce unemployment in Perry County by up to 40 percent by putting a total of 300 people back to work. These 46 newly-hired TDOT workers are among the first to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the Governor’s plan.
 

TDOT Announces Major Improvements to Hillsboro Road in Nashville

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Department of Transportation Commissioner Gerald Nicely joined Nashville Mayor Karl Dean today to announce a major improvement project along Hillsboro Road (US 431/SR 106) in the heart of Green Hills. Beginning next month, TDOT will begin a resurfacing project on Hillsboro Road from Interstate 440 to Harding Place. The project will also include the addition of a center turn lane on Hillsboro Road stretching from Sharondale Drive to Crestmoor Road.
 

State, Metro Reach Deal to Continue Transit Services for State Employees

State Expands Program to Include Work Trips on Music City Star
 
NASHVILLE – State employees who work in the Metro Nashville area will be able to continue riding public transit to and from work at no cost under a new agreement reached between the Metropolitan Transit Authority, Regional Transportation Authority, Tennessee Department of Transportation and Department of General Services. In addition, employees who live east of Nashville will now be able to take the Music City Star to work at no cost beginning July 1, 2009.
