KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The final stripes have been laid and the orange barrels have been removed along U.S. 441/SR-71 in Sevier County. The Tennessee Department of Transportation's emergency contractor, Charles Blalock and Sons, Inc., put the finishing touches on the roadway on Friday morning shortly after 8 a.m. In the final week of the project, crews finished striping and shoulder work to end the second phase of the contract right on schedule.

NASHVILLE - Governor Phil Bredesen today released the final three-year transportation program of his administration which includes completion of several major strategic corridor projects and continues funding for transit, rail, water and aviation programs. The three-year Multi-modal Work Program for 2010-2013 includes 238 transportation projects & programs, including 175 individual highway project phases, 31 transit, water, rail & aviation initiatives, and 32 transportation programs serving Tennesseans across the state.

The three year program includes $1.5 billion for highways and bridges to fund more than 175 individual project phases in 70 counties in Tennessee. Included in the proposal, which has been presented to the Legislature, are 45 highway and bridge projects in TDOT’s Region One.

Crews overcome stormy weather to remain ahead of schedule
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Work to remove and stabilize a major rockslide along U.S. 129/State Route 115 in Blount County continues to progress ahead of schedule. Scaling crews are now in the process of drilling 30 foot holes into the eastern side of the slide area for the future installation of large anchor bolts. The anchor bolts will be installed into the rock face and will help hold layers of rock together in place. The anchor bolts range in length from 20 feet to 50 feet and are expected to arrive at the project site this weekend.

New Hires Funded Through American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Initiative
 
NASHVILLE – Thirty Marshall County citizens hit the roads Monday, April 26 as new employees of the Tennessee Department of Transportation.  On April 7, Governor Phil Bredesen outlined a plan to use federal Recovery Act funds to reduce unemployment in Marshall County by putting a total of 175 people back to work. These 30 newly-hired TDOT workers are among the first to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the Governor’s plan.
 

Distracted Driving Campaign Draws Attention to Cell Phone Use

April 30 is National “No Phone Zone Day”
 
Nashville, TN – The Governor’s Highway Safety Office is joining the national Governors Highway Safety Association, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Oprah Winfrey for a national day of awareness to end distracted driving. Friday, April 30 will be designated the first national “No Phone Zone Day.”
 
“Many people use cell phones from a place they were never intended to be used: the driver’s seat,” said Governor Phil Bredesen. “When Tennesseans' hands are off the wheel, their focus is off the task of driving, and the consequences can be deadly.”
 

Update on U.S. 129 Rockslide Project for April 27

Drilling Continues as the next phase of repairs begin
 
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Work continues on a project to stabilize and remove debris from a rockslide on U.S. 129/SR-115 in Blount County, Tennessee. The Tennessee Department of Transportation emergency contractor Pacific Blasting & Demolition is working this week to drill blast holes at the bottom of the slide area for future trim blasting work. Rock scalers are also drilling holes at the east end of the slide to prepare for the installation of mesh draping which will be used to keep the slope stable.
