TEMA hosts first-in-the-nation class for Communications Unit Leader course

20 First Responders Prepared To Train Other Communications Unit Leaders

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency hosted the first All Hazards Type III Communications Unit Leader (COML) Train-the-Trainer Course in Nashville on Thursday. Seeking to enhance interoperability, 20 students representing seven states joined Tennessee communications unit leaders for the 8-hour course. These new trainers will take what they have learned and return to their states as the first step to ensuring that every state has trained instructors capable of teaching the COML course to other first responders.

State of Emergency for Ice Storm Concludes

NASHVILLE  – The state of emergency declared on January 28, 2009, officially concludes today, according to the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency.

On Wednesday, Jan. 28, a damaging winter storm caused extensive damages to power utility lines and knocked out power in Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri and Arkansas for several weeks in some cases. As a result, the counties of Dyer, Henry, Lake, Obion, Montgomery, Stewart and Weakley in Tennessee received federal disaster declarations to assist with recovery costs.

Damage Assessments Begin in West Tennessee

NASHVILLE – The Federal Emergency Management Agency today began the process of damage assessments in Dyer, Lake, Obion and Weakley Counties in West Tennessee. Governor Phil Bredesen requested the FEMA assessment of damages and expenses incurred as a result of last week’s winter storms.

As procedure, the state’s Emergency Operations Center was activated to ensure state agencies stand ready to respond to any emergency situations that might arise from winter weather.

Memphis Utility Mitigates Earthquake Risk to Electrical Grid

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen today announced the release of $3,415,006 for two projects in Tennessee through the Federal Pre-Disaster Mitigation grant program. In Shelby County, a grant of $2.6 million will allow Memphis Light, Gas & Water to reduce the risk to its electrical grid from earthquakes.

Mitigation Project in Nashville Will Remove Homes from Flood-Prone Area

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen today announced the release of $3,415,006 for two projects in Tennessee through the Federal Pre-Disaster Mitigation grant program. In Davidson County, a grant of $730,180 will allow Metro Water Services to eliminate the repetitive flooding of certain properties by purchasing the affected homes.

Tennessee Recieves $16.9 Million in Public Safety Grants

AWARDS WILL ENHANCE INTEROPERABLE COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS

NASHVILLE – Today Governor Phil Bredesen announced the release of $16,946,107 in Public Safety Interoperability Communications (PSIC) grants from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. These six PSIC projects will help state and local first responders by improving emergency communications and coordination during a natural or man-made disaster.
