Children in 52 Tennessee Counties Receive Free Books

Donation by Appalachian Regional Commission allows books for more than 185,000 children in Appalachian Tennessee

NASHVILLE-More than 185,000 children in Middle and East Tennessee counties will have the chance to develop their vocabulary, improve school readiness and grow a love for reading after a generous donation by the Appalachian Regional Commission, with assistance from the East Tennessee Development District. The $100,000 donation will be matched by the Governor’s Books from Birth Foundation (GBBF) to ensure that free, high-quality, age appropriate books are sent each month to registered children in Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program.

Tennessee Education Association Partners with Governor's Books from Birth Foundation and Tennessee Department of Education Office of Early Learning
NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen today joined the Tennessee Education Association, Governor’s Books from Birth Foundation and Tennessee Department of Education Office of Early Learning to celebrate the 14th annual Read Across America Day, a project of the National Education Association.
 
Read Across America Day is the celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Bredesen commemorated the occasion by reading Watty Piper’s The Little Engine That Could to a pre-K class at Bellshire Elementary Design Center School in Nashville.
 
“Reading to children from the start is one of the best things we can do to prepare them for success in the classroom,” said Bredesen. “I’m pleased to see the work of these partner organizations in focusing Tennesseans on the importance of early childhood education and motivating children to read.”

NASHVILLE-- Children all across Tennessee are thanking Comcast after the fulfillment of their $150,000 commitment over three years to the Governor's Books from Birth Foundation (GBBF), ensuring that books are in the hands of kids developing their vocabulary, school readiness, and love of learning and reading. GBBF, in partnership with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library and local affiliates in each county, ensures that free, high quality, age-appropriate books are mailed once a month directly to registered children’s homes in Tennessee, from birth until age five.

Managed Care Organization Commits to Multi-Year, Strategic Partnership with Shelby County Books from Birth

MEMPHIS – The Governor’s Books from Birth Foundation (GBBF) today announced a three-year, $900,000 collaboration with Volunteer State Health Plan (VSHP) to support the Imagination Library program in ShelbyCounty, where 18 percent of Tennessee’s total population under age five resides.
 
Created in 1996 by Dolly Parton, the Imagination Library mails a new, age-appropriate, high-quality book to registered children, every month from birth until age five – at no cost to the family, regardless of income. In Tennessee, the cost of purchasing and delivering books – $28 per child, per year – is split evenly between a non-profit sponsoring organization in every county and state funds administered by the GBBF. VSHP’s contribution will be allocated entirely toward the local sponsoring organization’s share in ShelbyCounty.

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen today announced that parents and caregivers in all 95 counties can now easily register children under age five for the Imagination Library online at www.GovernorsFoundation.org. The Governor made the announcement as he and First Lady Andrea Conte launched “Read to a Child Month” at the Nashville debut of a children’s play adapted from the Imagination Library’s most popular book, Llama Llama Red Pajama.

FRANKLIN – As Nissan North America celebrates the recent grand opening of its corporate headquarters in Franklin, Tenn., thousands of preschool children in four Tennessee counties can celebrate the gift of early reading, thanks to the Nissan Neighbors grant program. The Governor’s Books from Birth Foundation (GBBF) today announced the 2008 renewal of charitable gifts totaling $140,000 from Nissan North America. Part of Nissan’s commitment to communities where its employees live and work, the donations will promote early childhood literacy by supporting Imagination Library programs in Davidson, Franklin, Rutherford and Williamson counties.
