NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen today announced he has issued a Writ of Election to fill the vacancy in the Office of State Senate for District 31. The vacancy was created upon the resignation of State Senator Paul Stanley.

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen today named attorney and Assistant Public Defender Jeffery C. Kelly to the First Judicial District’s Office of Public Defender post. Kelly will fill a vacancy created by the death of Bob Oaks in June.

Significant Damage to Roads Caused by Flooding

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen has asked President Obama to declare Chester, Clay, Decatur, Jackson, Overton and Wayne counties federal disaster areas following severe storms, heavy rains, flooding and flash flooding on July 15-17, 2009. Should this initial request for public assistance be granted, the six Tennessee counties would have access to varying levels of federal assistance.

Obama Administration Funds Multistate Project

NASHVILLE – The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today said that Tennessee is one of five states participating in what is being described as “the largest deployment of electric vehicles and charging infrastructure ever undertaken.”
 
The State of Tennessee’s role in the project is an outgrowth of Governor Phil Bredesen’s conversations with Nissan North America, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), and other public and private partners committed to promoting the use of zero-emission vehicles, including electric vehicles.
 
“Our clean-energy future depends on the adoption of new technologies,” Bredesen said. “It’s gratifying to see Tennessee joining other top clean-energy states at the leading edge of this exciting new project.”

Hargett to Assume National Guard Association Post January 1, 2010

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen today announced the retirement of Major General Gus L. Hargett, Jr. as Tennessee’s Adjutant General and Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Military. The retirement is effective on December 31, 2009. Hargett’s retirement culminates a military career spanning almost 47 years.

NASHVILLE - Governor Phil Bredesen has appointed 135 men and women to serve on 64 state boards and commissions.
 
“I appreciate the willingness of these Tennesseans to serve the state through its boards and commissions,” said Bredesen. “I am confident they have the skills, experience and knowledge necessary to become valuable members of their respective boards and commissions. Tennessee is fortunate to have citizens willing to serve the state in this capacity.”

Bredesen Signs Charter Schools Bill

NASHVILLE - Governor Phil Bredesen today signed four pieces of legislation into law at a ceremonial bill signing ceremony at the Capitol. Among the bills signed was the Commercial Breeder Act (SB258/HB386), a bill related to funding for regional transportation authorities (SB1471/HB1263), a bill changing the law regarding selection of firefighter representatives to the TCRS board (SB473/HB1484), and a bill expanding charter schools in Tennessee (SB2133/HB2146).

Bredesen Announces Federal Disaster Assistance for Three Counties

Fayette, Haywood and Shelby County Utility Repairs and
Emergency Response Efforts to be Reimbursed

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen today announced the federal government has approved his request for disaster assistance for three west Tennessee counties due to severe storms, straight line winds, flooding, hail, and tornadoes that began June 12, 2009 and continued through the next week.

Local governments and public utilities of Fayette, Haywood and Shelby Counties are now eligible for Public Assistance Program reimbursement from the federal government. The public assistance designation also covers emergency response and recovery costs incurred by state government. Additional disaster designations for other counties maybe made at a later date after further evaluation.

Four Middle Tennessee Counties Approved

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen today announced the U.S. Department of Agriculture has approved his request for federal farm assistance for four Middle Tennessee counties due to heavy rains and extensive flooding that occurred in May. Counties designated a natural disaster for agriculture include Bedford, Hickman, Moore and Perry. 

Bredesen Accepts ECS Award for State Innovation in Education

NASHVILLE - Governor Phil Bredesen accepted the Education Commission of the States 2009 Frank Newman Award for Innovation on behalf of the State of Tennessee on Wednesday. The award was presented at the ECS 2009 National Forum on Education Policy being held in Nashville through Thursday.
 
The award, which recognizes excellence in shaping education policy, acknowledges Tennessee’s commitment to education reform through expansion of pre-K, teacher pay increases, higher standards and other education initiatives.
