Governor, Commissioner Announce $9.3 Million in Stimulus Funds for Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grants

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen and Commissioner Matt Kisber of the Department of Economic and Community Development announced today that $9.3 million in federal stimulus funds will be available to small- and medium-sized cities and counties through the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Program. The competitive grants are available to assist local governments in conserving energy and reducing fossil fuel emissions.

NASHVILLE – More than 4,000 children are now enrolled in the Child Care Recovery Scholarship program. This time-limited, American Recovery and Reinvestment Act program is helping thousands of families across the state make ends meet by reducing their weekly child care bills.
 
“This Recovery Act program is already helping provide safe, quality child care to thousands of Tennessee children,” said Governor Phil Bredesen. “Our goal has been to reach as many children as possible and encourage families to utilize all the benefits available to them under this program. We encourage any working family that may benefit to talk with their licensed child care provider or area Boys & Girls club for information.”

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Agriculture today announced the allocation of more than $572,000 to help five area food banks with the cost of providing food to the needy. The funds were provided through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

“Food banks can be a real a lifeline to some of our state’s most vulnerable citizens,” said Governor Phil Bredesen. “These Recovery Act funds will help put food on the table for Tennesseans in need.”

“Local food banks have seen the demand for their services increase due to the current economic situation. We’re glad these Recovery Act funds will be able to help cover some of the cost of providing food assistance to those who really need it in communities across Tennessee,” said state Agriculture Commissioner Ken Givens.

Tennessee's Public Infrastructure Needs Continue to Grow—Now Stand at $34.2 Billion

NASHVILLE – According to a new report released by the Tennessee Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations (TACIR), Tennessee needs at least $34.2 billion of public infrastructure improvements to be in some stage of development during the five-year period of 2007-2012.
 
While this report was being produced, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 created a number of stimulus funding programs for public infrastructure. Estimates from the Office of the Tennessee Recovery Act Management put Tennessee’s share of funds for infrastructure at around $686 million. These programs were a response to continued concerns about funding infrastructure needs and are intended to help preserve and create jobs and promote economic recovery. 

State's First ARRA Reporting Complete Detailing Funding, Jobs Data

NASHVILLE – Tennessee has successfully met its first federal reporting requirements for funds that have flowed to or through the state under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The Recovery Act is providing states with more than $246 billion of a total $787 billion made available to create and retain jobs, invest in infrastructure and speed economic recovery. Tennessee was allocated a total of $5.6 billion; the state reported on $214.9 million spent by the state through Recovery Act grants through September 30, 2009.

NASHVILLE - Governor Phil Bredesen announced today that eight small urban transit agencies will receive $9.7 million in funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for transit services in Tennessee's small urban areas of Bristol, Clarksville, Cleveland, Jackson, Johnson City, Kingsport, Lakeway and Murfreesboro (click link for details on each).

NASHVILLE — U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu today confirmed funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to support the Volunteer State Solar Initiative in Tennessee. Under DOE’s State Energy Program, Governor Phil Bredesen has proposed a statewide plan that prioritizes energy savings, creates or retains jobs, increases the use of renewable energy, and reduces carbon pollution.

Thousands of Tennessee Families Will Qualify For Weatherization Aid

NASHVILLE – The federal government today released the second installment of Weatherization Recovery funds for Tennessee.  More than $99 million is allocated to the Volunteer State under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).  Today’s award of $39.6 million will  be spent to improve the energy efficiency of thousands of homes across the state through measures that include insulation, weather stripping and window replacement to qualified Tennesseans.  The U.S. Department of Energy is releasing the funds incrementally, based on a state’s performance.  

Bredesen Announces Recovery Act Grants for 10 Tennessee Drinking Water Systems

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen and Department of Environment and Conservation Commissioner Jim Fyke announced today that 10 small drinking water systems will receive Drinking Water Mentoring Initiative grants funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The grants will provide free training materials and $15,100 in salary support to help the systems hire and train the next generation of drinking water professionals in Tennessee.

Bredesen Announces Second Round of Water and Wastewater Projects to Receive Recovery Act Funding

Nine Communities and Two Utility Districts Receive Funding, Additional Projects on Horizon

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen and Department of Environment and Conservation Commissioner Jim Fyke announced today that nine communities and two utility districts have been approved to receive low-interest loans for water and wastewater infrastructure improvements. The funding comes from a combination of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and the State Revolving Fund Loan Program. Forty percent of the funding is in the form of principal forgiveness, which does not have to be repaid.

This is the second round of Recovery Act grants and loans to be approved under the State Revolving Fund program.
