Training To Begin For Recovery Act Weatherization Program

NASHVILLE – The Department of Human Services announced today that training will begin next week to prepare energy auditors and contractors to weatherize thousands of homes across Tennessee, including homes of some families not previously eligible for the program. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will provide up to $99 million for weatherization projects in Tennessee.

Weatherization is the federal energy efficiency program for low- to moderate-income families. The types of weatherization projects allowed under the program may include installation of storm windows and insulation, air and duct sealing, caulking, and other related activities to reduce home energy costs and increase home energy efficiency.

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen joined TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely and Department of Tourist Development Commissioner Susan Whitaker at the Bristol, Tennessee Welcome Center today to launch Tennessee Groves, a program that provides people with a way to memorialize loved ones, commemorate special events and beautify the state. The program is a partnership between TDOT and the Tennessee Urban Forestry Council.

Grant Will Fund Efforts to “Electrify” Truck Stops Across Tennessee
 
NASHVILLE – Governor Bredesen announced today that the Environmental Protection Agency has selected the Tennessee Department of Transportation to receive a $2 million American Reinvestment and Recovery Act discretionary grant to begin equipping truck stops across the state with truck stop electrification (TSE) technology. Truck stop electrification systems provide heating and cooling for sleeper cab compartments and power to run electrical appliances, such as computers and microwaves. TSE systems also allow trucks outfitted with on-board equipment to "plug in" to operate necessary systems without idling the engine.

State Route 14 to be Widened Using 100% Recovery and Reinvestment Act Funds
 
NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen joined House Speaker Emeritus Jimmy Naifeh, TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely and officials from Tipton County today to break ground on a project to widen State Route 14, also known as the Austin Peay Highway, from north of State Route 206 to just east of State Route 384. The project is being totally funded through money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen and Commissioner of Education Dr. Timothy Webb today announced school food authority grants through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). These grants will fund the purchase of lunchroom equipment for school district’s participating in the National School Lunch Program.

The ARRA provides this funding as a one-time appropriation to Tennessee.

NASHVILLE – Forty-six Perry County citizens hit the roads today as new employees of the Tennessee Department of Transportation.  On May 15, Governor Phil Bredesen outlined a plan to use federal Recovery Act funds to reduce unemployment in Perry County by up to 40 percent by putting a total of 300 people back to work. These 46 newly-hired TDOT workers are among the first to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the Governor’s plan.
 

Bredesen Announces $635 Million in Recovery Act Stabilization Funds for Tennessee

First Allocation of Tennessee Stabilization Funds Approved to Save Jobs, Drive Reform 

NASHVILLE – Governor Phil Bredesen announced today the U.S. Department of Education has approved Tennessee’s application for the first $635 million available to the state through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) State Fiscal Stabilization Fund program. This represents 67 percent of the total stabilization funding available to Tennessee under this Recovery Act program. Tennessee will be eligible to apply for the remaining $313 million this fall.

Bredesen Outlines Plan to put Nearly 300 People to Work in Perry County

Effort to Combat Unemployment Targets County with State’s Highest Unemployment Rate
 
LINDEN, Tenn. – Governor Phil Bredesen and members of his Cabinet today joined state and local leaders to outline a plan to reduce unemployment in Perry County by using federal dollars from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The plan outlined by Bredesen will employ nearly 300 unemployed residents, potentially cutting unemployment in the county by to 40 percent.
 
Perry County has the state’s highest rate of unemployment – 25.4 percent – with 760 unemployed residents. The county’s unemployment rate was as high as 27.3 percent in January. The next highest rate of county unemployment is 18.8 percent.
 
“The jobs package we’re launching today will put people back to work immediately and begin to ease some of the strain caused by the economic downturn, which are key goals of President Obama’s recovery plan,” said Bredesen. “The effects of the economy are being felt across the state, but Perry County has been hit especially hard, and I’m glad the state can offer this assistance during these tough times.”
