Bridge Project Creates Changes on Rosa Parks Boulevard

NASHVILLE – Beginning next week, motorists traveling on Rosa Parks Boulevard near MetroCenter should be alert to changes to the westbound travel lanes. The changes are necessary as a project to widen the Rosa Parks Boulevard Bridge over Interstate 65 moves into its second phase.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Tennessee Department of Transportation Commissioner Gerald Nicely will visit the U.S. 64 rockslide sites in Polk County on Friday, March 19. Nicely will update the progress made on clearing the slides and improving the roadway and the schedule for reopening U.S. 64.

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Department of Transportation crews will close two interchange ramps on Interstate 440 in Nashville this weekend as a major concrete repair project continues. The closures are as follows:
 
*      Ramp from I-440 West to Interstate 65 South
*       Ramp from Interstate 65 North to I-440 West
 
The ramps will close beginning at 4:00 a.m. Saturday, March 20, 2010 and will reopen no later than 6:00 a.m. Monday, March 22, 2010.

The Tennessee Viticulture Advisory Board will meet April 13 at 1 p.m. CDT in the Executive Conference of the State Capitol Building in Nashville. The agenda includes a discussion of the vacant board position representing commercial grape growing, a presentation by the Department of Revenue on shipping rules for Tennessee wineries, a discussion of legislative activities and other business as presented. 

State Soil Conservation Committee to Meet

The State Soil Conservation Committee will meet March 31 at 10 a.m. CDT in the rear conference room of the Holeman Building at Ellington Agricultural Center, located at 440 Hogan Road in Nashville. The agenda includes a review of soil conservation district boards and activities, a report on the Agricultural Resources Conservation Fund, reports from state and federal agricultural agencies, a review of legislative issues and other business as presented.

Evaluations continue for rockslide on U.S. 129/SR-115

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.- Both lanes on U.S. 129/SR-115 remain closed at the scene of a rockslide approximately two miles south of the Chilhowee Dam and more than 13 miles north of the  Tennessee and North Carolina state line.
 
TDOT geotechnical engineers have conducted preliminary evaluations of the slide and are currently developing a plan to stabilize the mountainside and re-open the road safely and expeditiously.   No timeline has been confirmed.
 
Meanwhile, motorists can take temporary detours around the rockslide area.

Debris Removal and Rock Bolting Operations Continue

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Over the weekend, daytime construction crews continued hauling slide debris from the site and reconstructed the 275 ton crawler crane approximately 30’ to the east so that hand and mechanical scaling could continue on the eastern face of the slope.  The contractor resumed scaling today and will continue until the slope is free of loose rock and debris that might otherwise serve as a hazard to workers and future traffic on the roadway surface below.

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Department of Transportation crews will close two ramps located along Interstate 440 in Nashville this weekend as a major concrete rehabilitation project continues. The closures are as follows:
 
Ramp from I-440 Westbound to Hillsboro Road (Ramp to 21st Avenue will remain open)
Ramp from I-440 Eastbound to Murphy Road
 
The ramps will close beginning at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 12, 2010 and will reopen no later than 6:00 a.m. Monday, March 15, 2010.

NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee Highway Patrol and the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) will deliver the “Between the Barrels” presentation to 450 high school students at Forrest High School in Marshall County, Thursday, March 11, 2010. The safe driving program, which is geared to students who are just learning to drive, aims to reduce the chances of teens being involved in a dangerous work zone crash.

Knoxville, Tenn. –  Behind the scenes work has allowed the Tennessee Department of Transportation to temporarily open all lanes of U.S. 441 (The Spur) in Sevier County.
 
Emergency contractor Charles Blalock and Sons, Inc. is currently working offsite utilizing molds to pour concrete panels that will form a stained rock façade which will cover the recently constructed retaining wall. The retaining wall was built during phase one of the project to stabilize the rock slope above the roadway.
 
TDOT estimates crews will begin to install the rock façade during the week of March 15. At that time one southbound lane will close to allow crews to safely work on phase two of the rockslide repairs.
